The hard pencil light slashed across my eyes as I tried to figure out where I was, who I was, why I was hurting, and what the attractive blonde woman who then leaned over me and said she was my fiancé might look like with her clothes off. If she was my fiancé. I should know, so why didn't I? Troubling. But then, after a brief period, my memory came back, big chunks of it. She explained that the fiancé thing was just a ruse to gain access to my room without having to claim government credentials, and then I realized that the only woman I had seen naked in the immediate vicinity was the one walking toward me down the corridor with concern on her face.

"What's the worst of it? His injuries," Anna asked once the pleasantries were done.

The fake fiancé went through a list of various breaks, cuts, and contusions and finished with, "We go now to morgue. He killed a man."

Anna looked at me with an impatient, unspoken, again?

"If you're about to ask whether it was for work or play — neither," I told her. "Two of Niemiec's Wagner mercs jumped me, Van Zyl and his Nigerian pal.

Anna had more questions, but the drugs had yet to kick in, and I was too aware of how much I was hurting to recall specifics. A short while later, I was standing over the naked body of the vaper, the lower third of his left leg attached by a thin band of muscle, a blood vessel or two, and a narrow flap of skin. Though a full autopsy had yet to be performed, the ME had speculated that the cause of death was more than likely a broken back. She also believed that it would have been instantaneous. I had a flash of memory along those lines — the crunch, the sound of his body with my weight behind it crashing against the pole, and the sudden dead weight in my arms.

Anna commented, "So I suppose this is the other guy I should see?"

Conversations between U.S. and Polish authorities had been held at the highest level. The result — the story of a mystery corpse left parked at the base of a "No Stopping" sign had been pulled from local media. Investigations by local homicide authorities had also been headed off. The body on the slab had a toe tag labeling him the Polish equivalent of a John Doe. Anna's phone beeped. She excused herself and went to a corner of the room, leaving Kaz, the corpse, and me to get to know each other.

"She is pretty your partner," the Polish agent observed with a nod in Anna's direction. "You have slept with her?"

I ignored the question. HR, privacy issues, et cetera, and so forth...

"Do you love her, or is she a fuck for you?"

Okay, so what is it with these Europeans? Can't they have a healthy puritanical embarrassment about sex like us Americans? "Maybe both," I said, breaking under the pressure of this relentless interrogation.
